On this day in 1960, Eileen Fulton made her soap opera debut in the role of Lisa Miller on As the World Turns. The character was so popular...in the beginning...that Fulton would become the first soap opera actress to hire a publicist.Her character became hated after a simple sequence where Lisa hired a maid to clean the house and went gallivanting around town. When mother-in-law Nancy complimented Lisa on what a nice home she made for her son Bob, the audience became furious, stopping Fulton on the street and slapping her. Seriously! CBS had to hire a bodyguard to escort Fulton to and from the studio.
In 1990 - CBS aired the series finale of the primetime soap opera, Falcon Crest. If you missed it, Newsweek magazine described Falcon Crest as "Basically Dallas in the Napa Valley, with a female tyrant, Angela Channing, vineyards instead of oil rigs, a six-month coma and a plot to take over the world." Notable castmembers include Jane Wyman (Angela Channing), Lorenzo Lamas (Lance Cumson) and David Selby (Richard Channing).
In the late 1980's, television ratings were dominated by sitcoms and even Soap Opera Digest gave Falcon Crest the title of 'Most Ruined Show' in its Best & Worst Of 1989 issue. It would be canceled in 1990 after nine years due to poor ratings.
