A Trip Down Memory Lane - May 17

On this day in 1979, the Daytime Emmy Awards introduced the Best Supporting Actor and Actress categories. The first-ever winners of these awards would be General Hospital's Peter Hansen (Lee Baldwin) and Days of our Lives star, Suzanne Rogers (Maggie Horton).

In 1995 - Stone Cates (Michael Sutton) told Robin Scorpio (Kimberly McCullough) that he was HIV-positive on General Hospital. The character would die that year of AIDS-related illness at the age of 19. Sutton received a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series the following year.

In 2000 - Beverly Hills, 90210 aired its series finale on FOX. Lasting ten years, the show became a global pop culture phenomenon with its cast members, particularly Jason Priestley and Luke Perry, who became teen idols. More than a few actors who have roots in soap operas were cast on the show, including Vanessa Marcil and Daniel Cosgrove. Over 25 million people tuned in to watch 90210's final episode on this day 24 years ago.
